I just can't believe that it is October already! We've been learning so much and having a lot of fun doing it. I've updated the pictures to show you our favorite little authors reading their All About Apples books to the class and to show you how much we loved being scientists today while we investigated apples. The students truly did a wonderful job of exploring and rotating through centers. Of course they enjoyed test-tasting the apples the most! Thank you for sending in the apples to make this possible! So much fun!

Back to school is such an exciting time! It is also a hectic time of year! In the five days of having our class, I have already seen big improvements. Students are getting used to routines and the classroom procedures. These first weeks of school always fascinate me as I enjoy watching the students grow.
Here is some information for you... Behavior- Last week I observed the students and we began to practice using the behavior chart. Tomorrow we will begin using it and it will get recorded in the agenda each day. I have been taking notes daily about specific behaviors, so if you need specifics let me know. The students have learned so much all ready and I can not wait to see what October brings. We have a wonderful class and we have had a lot of fun learning together. This month we will be learning about bullying as it is Bully Prevention Month. We will also learn more about writing (drawing pictures, labeling, and sounding out words and writing them), reading (letter sounds, associating the sound with the letter, sounding out the letters in words, practice reading pattern books), math (continue to learn about counting and numbers).

What a fabulous day for a field trip! Today we went to Anne Springs Farm in SC for pumpkin picking! The class was sooooo very excited as they should have been.
We began our trip with running through and jumping on bales of hay and rolling around in a ginormous "hamster wheel". From there, we tried to get lost in the corn maze. We were so excited when we finally made it out! Then we learned about corn- did you know that corn comes in all different colors-even pink! After learning about the corn, we ate some popcorn (of course!) and traveled over (hay ride!) to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins! The students searched all around the field for their perfect pumpkin to take home. Once we found our pumpkins, the tractor took us back over to the main area where we met a snake, a turtle, some goats, a pig, a donkey, and two miniature horses. We ended our trip with a picnic lunch. Everyone was worn out and some even took a little nap on the way home. We had two parent chaperones that I would like to thank, Ms. May and Ms. Mackey. They did an outstanding job of helping to supervise and take care of students throughout the trip. Thank you so much for all of your help!! On Wednesday, we had an early dismissal day. We took advantage of the day and we experimented with force and motion. We discussed push, pull, speed, and ramps. Be sure to check out the pictures showing the fun we had learning! Wow! What a difference a few weeks can make! We are rocking and rolling along in our class!
Socially, we are fine-tuning our rules and procedures, working on being a nice friend, and sharing. In math, we moved on from sorting by attributes and we are focusing on numbers, what makes of a number, counting backwards, counting forwards, what number is missing, what number comes before and after a specific number, adding numbers together and each day we begin with working on the calendar. In literacy, we are working on using strategies to read- using the pictures, looking for sight words, sounding out, and asking ourselves if it makes sense. We also discuss who the character is, what is happening in the story, and what is most important. We do a lot around word work. This is where we learn about sounds and how to put them together to make different words. We have been working a lot on pointing to each word when we read, understanding that the spaces help us to identify the words, that a group of letters make up a word and realizing these differences between words and letters. For writing, we are working on sounding out words and writing each sound, thinking of stories to write, writing a beginning, middle and end of a story, illustrating our stories and labeling parts of the pictures. It is hard to think of a story, but the students are doing a great job! Please be sure to check your email for notes and reminders from me. I send out an email every weekend. If you haven't been getting the email, please let me know. This week is a busy week as we have an early release day on Wednesday, Oct. 12th, our field trip on Thursday, Oct. 13th, and the Fall Dance and Book Fair Opening on Friday, Oct, 14 in the evening. Notices were sent home last week. Please be sure to return the early release form about how your child is getting home on Wednesday. As always, please contact me if you have any questions! Welcome! As you already have heard if you came to one of our Back to School sessions, I am super excited for this year! We made great progress this week and I am looking forward to watching the class learn and grow!
I look forward to working with each of you this year as we have a fantastic class. Each student and family has something unique about them which makes us so special. Over the next two weeks, The class will focus on learning the expectations of the school and classroom. They will help set the tone of the classroom for the rest of the school year. Agendas will begin going home on Monday. Please make sure to read for at least 10 minutes every night and initial it in the reading log section of the agenda. You will find out about behavior in the comment section of the agenda. I hope to see you this week for Curriculum Night on Thursday! This year has flown by and it has been so much fun! We have worked hard and played hard this year as you can see from the pictures!
We began the week with camping day. The students loved being in the tents and reading with flashlights. Then we had our Love of Reading day, where we made cool forts, read books, and showed off stuffed animals. Game was a lot of fun as the students really enjoy learning new games and playing with their friends. We ended the week with Spring Fling. This day consisted of watching Norm from the North, having Black Belt World come in to teach a 30 minute class, eating cotton candy and dancing up a storm, and finally ending the day outside bouncing and sliding on the inflatables. I look forward to having another great week and will cherish these last memories that we make as a class. WOW! It's May and I only have a few more weeks with you. It's an exciting time as I get to assess the students and see just how much they have learned this year. It's also a sad time as we begin to bring this school year to a close and it's beginning to sink in that I won't be their teacher anymore...and that I will have new students coming in August.
We've been pretty busy lately. Students from Olympic HS came over six times to teach a unit on needs and wants. We finished our first chapter book, Hi! Fly Guy and began our second book, Frog and Toad Together. We began planting a garden with mimosa flowers, sunflowers, radishes, lettuce and kale to start. Yesterday was Star Wars day and today we celebrated Cinco de Mayo. We made decorations for both! We also had Cougarthon last week and this week, our field trip. The students had a blast and both days were great. Thanks especially goes out to all of the parents who came to Cougarthon and/or on the field trip. In between ll of the fun stuff we've managed to learn a little too! I hope all of the moms have a great weekend with Mother's Day coming up this weekend. I also wanted to apologize as I had used my phone to update this site and then I realized that for whatever reason, it didn't actually ever update it when I went on look at it on the computer. I'm sure you've been excited to see pictures of what we've been doing! Enjoy! What a fabulous day! The students and I had a blast. Field day was such a great experience for them. I didn't know I had so many athletes in the class! They practiced hitting off a tee, putting with golf clubs, played disk golf with a frisbee, ran track and jumped over hurdles, did the high jump, played soccer, and practice football, just to name some of the events. Everything took place on the Olympic HS track with high school students running the events.
Then we came in and made egg "baskets" that later turned into snack bags and made a bunny ear hat for our heads. After lunch, we went into the courtyard for our egg hunt. After that fun, we settled down with a movie. It was great! |
